Strange Activity in the Neighborhood, 12/29/08

This week, 12/29/08, there has been some suspicious activity around the Waterford/Loch Road area. Monday night there was a white van driving slowly around the neighborhood, driving around several times. Tuesday, during the day, the Merchant family arrived home to a young man standing in their driveway. Once the young man noticed their car turn into their driveway, he asked them for $5. The Merchants house is on Loch Drive, but on the corner of Waterford beside the lake.

It is important that we keep our eyes and ears open and all take action to any unusual activity that we may see around the neighborhood. Especially this time of year when several families may not be home. Even if you're not sure if someone is home or out of town, it's better to be safe and contact the non-emergency line at the Police Department. Together, this is how we can prevent crime and keep our community safe. Please notify your block neighbors who do not have access to this email.

Neighborhood Watch Meeting Update!

Our Neighborhood Watch Meeting was Monday, June 2. We had a great turn-out and our neighborhood was well represented. Several topics were up for discussion and we all learned quite a bit. Special thanks goes out to the following folks who helped to make our meeting a success:

Kemona McCarter, Neighborhood Assistant Specialist
336-734-1265
kemonam@cityofws.org
Kemona's responsibility is to make it easy to deal with city government – whether you need a pothole fixed, or a street light replaced, or have an issue with the way the city is doing something. She is a veteran city employee & knows the ins and outs of city government. Her job is to resolve issues, not just be a referral service. She will take your question, get an answer and get back to you. And rumor has it she is quick, too! If the issue is beyond the scope of city government, she’ll put you on the right track.

Officer Pritchard, Neighborhood Watch Officer
Officer Pritchard offfered great advice on home safety and preventative tips. Here are a few of his suggestions:
Home Safety
• Pay attention to suspicious activity in your neighborhood
• Keep your house locked, even when you are at home (especially out in the yard)
• Keep the bushes trimmed to 3 feet or less
• Lock all windows
• Hide valuables in less obvious places
• Don't have objects lying around your house that can be used as tools to break in with

Driving/Car Safety
• Keep your cell phone charged, you never know when you will need it
• Keep you car doors locked at all times, especially while driving
• When walking to your car, have your keys ready
• Be alert, pay attention to your surroundings
• Follow your instincts. Better to be safe than sorry
• Stay in well-lit areas. Park your car near or under a light
• Be hyper-sensitive at ATM machines. Try to avoid them at night
• Don't go home if you're being followed. Go to a store, gas station or somewhere with lots of people.

Also in attendance was Captain Best, Precinct Captain and Detective Livingston who both talked about crime stats and ideas.

Our New Blog Site is Up & Running!

Please check it out at Town Country Watch Update!

Welcome to our new Town & Country Neighborhood Watch blog site!

If you have any ideas, tips, or would like a blog of your own posted, please submit it to Authors Needed! We will check weekly for new posting requests.

In the summer of 2007 there was a meeting to explore the possibility of forming a Neighborhood Watch group in Town and Country. Because a Watch group should not consist of more than 100 homes, our neighborhood was divided into sections and each section began the process of establishing a Watch program. We are part of Neighborhood Watch group #156 and we consist of the section of Town and Country from Kingston Rd by the pool toward Reynolda Rd and Ransom Rd. We are a new but strong program, seeking to make our neighborhood safer and more connected and we will work to help the rest of Town and Country form an equally strong program.

We hope you will check this site routinely for updates or to post information related to neighborhood safety that would be of interest to our residents.

Watch Captain T & C NW #156
